October Guest Roast!

Another month has begun, and another Hero is joining Host Café’s family. We love to give a space for roasters that through coffee are making a positive impact on several disadvantaged communities. In October, we will host a coffee that, not only is a delight to our palate, but it also leaves an interesting aftertaste of gender equality.

This month we are proud to collaborate with Girls Who Grind Coffee

The founders of this roastery are Fi O’Brien (from Melbourne) and Casey Lalonde (from Upstate New York); they launched their all-women roastery in 2017 after noticing a gap in the market for female-produced coffee. In an industry that is mainly male-dominated, they decided to tackle gender inequality by making women empowerment their mission. Girls Who Grind Coffee does not only focus on the roasting and brewing process, the founders make sure that from the farmer to the barista, women are valued.

As not many people know, women are a significant part of the coffee farming industry, but they often work in horrible conditions and are paid less than their male counterpart. As Fi says to Alicja Jakeway in an interview for We Heart: “Our DR Congo coffee supports the awe-inspiring Rebuild Women’s Hope Program; established by gender equality pioneer Marceline Budza. RWHP transforms the lives of Congolese women through entrepreneurship and economic empowerment training in the coffee chain. It is no secret that the life of a Congolese woman is incredibly difficult[...] Another example is our Nicaragua Jinotega from Finca La Plata, a farm run by fearless boss lady Cynthia LaRue, who returned to Nicaragua to rebuild her family’s coffee farm after the revolution had forced the family to flee to the USA some years earlier.”

The roastery collaborates with non-profit organisations and women cooperatives, to make sure that women can work in better conditions, with better salary and, above all, are able to reach positions of power within the coffee industry.

The Collaboration:

·         Pop by our coffee shop to try this very ladylike roast as AeroPress filter coffee.

·         Or, if you feel adventurous grab one of the 250g bags Rwanda roast and enjoy it at home.

Join Girls Who Grind Coffee and Host Café for ethical coffee at our church. And remember, girls just wanna have fun… and coffee!
